16MnCr5 / 20MnCr5 is a low alloy chromium, manganese case hardening steel. Carburised 16MnCr5 / 20MnCr5 gives a hard case with a strong core whilst retaining a degree of toughness. It is suited for applications which require a combination of toughness and wear resistance and is commonly supplied in round bar. These steels are extensively used in the auto sector and to manufactory rotary parts.

Applications
1018 has a wide variety of applications. It is used for parts requiring cold forming, such as crimping, swaging or bending. For severe bends, stress relieving may be necessary to prevent cracking. It is highly suitable for carburized parts, such as gears, ratchets, worms, pinions, pins, chain pins, dowels, machine parts, non-critical components of tool and die sets, tool holders, etc. It is used when good workability is required, on parts requiring threading, drilling, punching and machining. It is extensively used for mounting plates, spacers and fixtures. AISI 1018 is suitable for all applications that do not require the greater strength of high carbon and alloy steels.

Machnieability and Weldability
This grade is easily welded by all welding processes including gas, air, and submerges arc, and the resultant welds and joints are of extremely high quality. Preheat and post-weld heating is generally not necessary.The machinability index is also reasonably good.

MS Bright Rounds or Shaftings are bright bars that are used for the purpose of shafts. The basic requirement is that the bars should be long (as per requirement) and straight. Generally these Shaftings are round in shape, however in certain cases even squares and hexagonal shaped bars are used.

Carbon steel or plain-carbon steel, is a metal alloy and a combination of two elements, iron and carbon. Other elements are present in quantities too small to affect the properties. The only other alloying elements allowed in plain-carbon steel are: manganese (1.65% max), silicon (0.60% max), and copper (0.60% max). Steel with a low carbon content has the same properties as iron, soft but easily formed. As carbon content rises the metal becomes harder and stronger but less ductile and more difficult to weld. Higher carbon content lowers steel's melting point and its temperature resistance in general.

Mild or Low Carbon Steel: approximately 0.05% to 0.25% carbon content with up to 0.4% manganese content (e.g. AISI 1018 steel). Less strong but cheap and easy to shape; surface hardness can be increased through carburizing.

Medium Carbon Steel: approximately 0.29% to 0.54% carbon content with 0.60 to 1.65% manganese content(e.g. AISI 1040 steel). Balances ductility and strength and has good wear resistance; used for large parts, forging and car parts.

High Carbon Steel: approximately 0.55% to 0.95% carbon content with 0.30 to 0.90% manganese content. Very strong, used for springs and high-strength wires.

Very High Carbon Steel: approximately 0.96% to 2.1% carbon content, specially processed to produce specific atomic and molecular microstructures.

EN8 / EN8D / C45 / AISI1042 is a silicon killed medium carbon steel. Higher carbon content imparts increased strength over low carbon steels, such as 1018. Applications
EN8 EN8D C45 AISI1042 Steel Bright Bars have a wide variety of applications. It is used for machinery parts, die forging, hot upsetting, gears, crankshafts, shafts, axles, bolts, studs, pinions, casters and support plates. Can be hammer forged. 1045 can be used where greater strength is required than can be obtained from the lower carbon steels. It responds to heat treatment, and a wide range of properties can be obtained. When higher dimensional accuracy and straightness are required in the productions of shafts are required, 1045 Turned, Ground and Polished Precision Shafting is recommended.

Machine ability and Weldability
Machine ability is rated at 64% of B1112. Average cutting speed 95-120 ft/min. AISI 1045 is not readily welded, due to it''''s higher carbon content. On thin sections, arc or gas welding can be used without preheating, but in welds and joints on thicker sections, preheating is necessary. Stress relieving after welding is also recommended.

Free Cutting Steels are steels with a higher than usual content of sulfur and phosphorus intended for the fabrication of parts for high-speed automatic and semiautomatic machine tools. Free-cutting steel is produced in the form of rods, and it contains carbon, silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. The high sulfur content leads to the formation of inclusions (for example, manganese sulfide) disposed along the grain. These inclusions facilitate shearing and promote grinding and easy chip formation. For these purposes, free-cutting steel is sometimes alloyed with lead and tellurium.

Free machining steel is steel that forms small chips when machined. This increases the machinability of the material by breaking the chips into small pieces, thus avoiding entanglement in the machinery. This enables automatic equipment to run without human interaction. Free machining steel with lead also allow for higher machining rates. Free machining steel costs 15 to 20% more than a standard steel, but this is made up by increased machining speeds, larger cuts, and longer tool life.

The disadvantages of free machining steel are: ductility is decreased; impact resistance is reduced; copper-based brazed joints suffer from embrittlement with bismuth free machining grades; shrink fits are not as strong.

We also offer medium carbon constructional steel EN8 that is suitable for machine building, chain links, agricultural implements, OEM, automobile sector, arms and defence industry etc. EN8 and equivalent steels are heat treatable steels and after heat treatment offer sufficient hardness and toughness for many uses.

Grade offered include BS970-1955 EN8, BS970-1955 EN8D, BS & DIN C45, Ck45, BS970-1991 080M40, JSI G4051 S40C, S45C.
Sections offered include Rounds, Squares, Flats and Hexagonal sections. We are offering these in Hot Rolled condition i.e. Black bars.

Bright Bars can be offered against specific inquiry and subject to raw material availability / MOQ being satisfied.
