Low carbon steel. Has good hardening properties, fair machinability. Readily brazed and welded. Alloy 1018 is the most commonly available of the cold-rolled steels. It is generally available in round rod, square bar, and rectangle bar. It has a good combination of all of the typical traits of steel - strength, some ductility, and comparative ease of machining. Chemically, it is very similar to A36 Hot Rolled steel, but the cold rolling process creates a better surface finish and better properties.
1018 is among the most commonly available grades available in the world. It is widely available in cold finished rounds, squares, flat bar and hexagons. Despite its unimpressive mechanical properties, the alloy is easily formed, machined, welded and fabricated. Due to its higher Mn content, it can, in thin sections, be hardened to Rc 42.
The alloy is a free machining grade that is often employed in high volume screw machine parts applications. It is commonly employed in shafts, spindles, pins, rods, sprocket assemblies and an incredibly wide variety of component parts. 1018 is rated at 62% of 1112 carbon steel. The alloy can be easily brought to a fine finish, its chips are continuous and hard and it can be machined in all conditions.
1018 Cold Rolled Steel can be referred to as mild, low carbon steel. There are several types including 1018 Flat Bar Cold Finish, 1018 Round Bar Cold Finish and 1018 Square Bar Cold Finish. 1018 is readily available around the world and is available in several shapes. Though it ranks below average in its mechanical properties, the alloy is easily formed, machined, welded and manufactured. 1018 cold rolled steel is often used for screw machine parts, shafts, pins, spindles and rods.

High speed steel (HSS or HS) is a subset of tool steels, usually used in tool bits and cutting tools. It is often used in power saw blades and drill bits. It is superior to the older high carbon steel tools used extensively through the 1940s in that it can withstand higher temperatures without losing its temper (hardness). This property allows HSS to cut faster than high carbon steel, hence the name high speed steel. At room temperature, in their generally recommended heat treatment, HSS grades generally display high hardness (above HRC60) and a high abrasion resistance (generally linked to tungsten content often used in HSS) compared to common carbon and tool steels.
The main use of high speed steels continues to be in the manufacture of various cutting tools: drills, taps, milling cutters, tool bits, gear cutters, saw blades, etc., although usage for punches and dies is increasing. High speed steels also found a market in fine hand tools where their relatively good toughness at high hardness, coupled with high abrasion resistance and fine, made them suitable for low speed applications requiring a durable keen (sharp) edge, such as files, chisels, hand plane blades, and high quality kitchen and pocket knives.

M2M2 is a high speed steel in tungsten-molybdenum series. The carbides in it are small and evenly distributed. It has high wear resistance. After heat treatment, its hardness is the same as T1, but its bending strength can reach 4700 MPa, and its toughness and thermo plasticity are higher than T1 by 50%. It is usually used to manufacture a variety of tools, such as drill bits, taps and reamers. Its decarbonization sensitivity is a little bit high.
M35M35 is similar to M2, but with 5% cobalt added. The addition of cobalt increases heat resistance.
M42M42 is a molybdenum-chromium-vanadium-tungsten high speed steel alloy with an additional 8% cobalt. It is widely used in metal manufacturing because of its superior red-hardness as compared to more conventional high speed steels, allowing for shorter cycle times in production environments due to higher cutting speeds or from the increase in time between tool changes. M42 is also less prone to chipping when used for interrupted cuts and cost less when compared to the same tool made of carbide. Tools made from cobalt-bearing high speed steels can often be identified by the letters HSS-Co.

EN19 also known as 709M40 is a high quality alloy steel, renowned for its good ductility and shock resistant and its resistance to wear properties. It is suitable for gears, pinions, shafts, spindles,; it is now also widely used in the oil and gas industry.

EN 353 steel has carbon content of 0.17% and the most common form of this steel is in the shape of round bars. EN353 provides material properties that are acceptable for many automobile applications such as heavy duty gear, shaft, pinion, cam shafts, gudgeon pins. A Free Cutting Steel is known to have increased machinability of the material by breaking the chips into small pieces, thus avoiding entanglement in the machinery. Free Machining Steel also allows the use of automatic equipment to run without human interaction. Free machining steel with lead also allow for higher machining rates. Free machining steel costs 15 to 20% more than a standard steel, but this is made up by increased machining speeds, larger cuts, and longer tool life.

The disadvantages of free machining steel are: ductility is decreased; impact resistance is reduced; copper-based brazed joints suffer from embrittlement with bismuth free machining grades; shrink fits are not as strong. Some of these problems can be negated by the using Free machining steel after cold drawing.

Product Details:

A tough core and a hard case are the desired attributes of case-hardened steel components. This combination of properties provides wear resistance and fatigue strength at the surface, and impact strength in the core. These steels when forged and achieve a bar like shape are known as Forged Case Hardening Steel Bars.

More common case hardening steels are EN36 A/B/C, SAE8620, 16MnCr5, 20MnCr5, SCH420, etc.

Hot Forged bars are manufactured by shaping of metal using localized compressive forces. The blows are delivered with a hammer (often a power hammer) or a die. Process involves heating the metal, usually in a forge. Forged bars can range in weight from a few kilograms to a few tons. The forged bars, though, expensive as compared to rolled products have better physical properties. Just like rolled products, these can also be made in many shapes and sizes like rounds, squares, flats / slabs, hexagons, etc.
